About This Role

DirtWorks USA is actively recruiting skilled heavy equipment operators to support its excavation and site preparation operations across the Phoenix metropolitan area. This full-time onsite role is for operators with proven experience running excavators, bulldozers, skid steers, and compactors on grading and earthwork projects. You will be an essential part of the site preparation crew responsible for clearing land, digging foundations, grading pads, and installing underground utilities for residential subdivisions and commercial developments. DirtWorks USA offers industry-leading pay, reliable year-round work, and a strong safety-first culture on every site.

Role Context

DirtWorks USA is a site work and excavation contractor serving homebuilders, commercial developers, and municipalities across the Greater Phoenix area and Maricopa County. The company manages multiple active job sites simultaneously covering land clearing, rough grading, finish grading, and underground utility installation. Equipment operators report to site foremen and are responsible for executing earthwork operations efficiently while maintaining strict grade tolerances and adhering to all safety protocols. Arizona continues to be one of the fastest-growing construction markets in the United States, ensuring consistent work for qualified operators throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate hydraulic excavators ranging from mini-excavators to large-class machines for foundation digging, trenching, and mass earthmoving operations.
  • Grade and shape building pads, roadways, drainage swales, and retention basins to engineered elevations using GPS machine control systems.
  • Operate bulldozers and motor graders for rough clearing, mass grading, and finish grading operations across residential and commercial sites.
  • Run skid steer loaders for backfill operations, material handling, demolition debris removal, and site clean-up between construction phases.
  • Operate vibratory compactors and plate compactors to achieve specified soil density on pads, trenches, and subgrade surfaces before paving.
  • Assist in the installation of underground utilities including storm drain pipe, sewer lines, water mains, and conduit in open cut trenches.
  • Perform daily pre-operation inspections on assigned equipment and report defects, fluid levels, and maintenance needs to the equipment supervisor.
  • Read and follow grading plans, utility drawings, and site plans to ensure earthwork operations are executed to design intent and survey stakes.
  • Maintain clean machine cabs, comply with all OSHA excavation and trenching safety standards, and participate in daily toolbox safety meetings.

Requirements & Skills

  • Minimum three years of hands-on heavy equipment operation experience in site work, excavation, or grading on commercial or residential projects.
  • Proficiency operating at least two of the following: hydraulic excavator, bulldozer, motor grader, skid steer loader, or vibratory roller compactor.
  • Experience reading grading plans, utility drawings, and cut-fill calculations to execute earthwork operations accurately in the field.
  • Familiarity with GPS machine control technology such as Trimble or Topcon grade guidance systems for excavators and dozers is preferred.
  • Understanding of OSHA excavation safety standards including soil classification, sloping, shoring, and competent person requirements for trenching work.
  • Valid Arizona driver licence with a clean driving record; CDL Class A or B is advantageous for transporting equipment between project sites.
  • Physical ability to climb in and out of equipment multiple times daily, work outdoors in Arizona heat, and perform physically demanding site tasks.
  • Strong situational awareness, machine control skills, and the ability to work safely around other equipment operators, laborers, and underground utilities.

Benefits & Work Conditions

  • Competitive hourly rate with weekly pay and overtime compensation for all hours exceeding 40 per week on active project assignments.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance benefits effective after 60 days of full-time employment, with family coverage options available.
  • Paid holidays including New Year, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas observed by the company annually.
  • Annual tool and safety gear allowance including hard hat, safety glasses, hi-vis vest, and steel-toed work boots provided by DirtWorks USA.
  • Strong year-round project pipeline across Maricopa County with consistent 40-plus hour work weeks and regular overtime available on large sites.
