HDD Hardware Design Engineer

Seagate Technology

Full-time Onsite United States

Job Description

About This Role

Seagate Technology is hiring an HDD Hardware Design Engineer to work on read/write channel electronics, servo systems, and spindle motor control hardware for hard disk drives deployed in hyperscale cloud data centers. You will contribute to the hardware that stores the majority of the world's persistent data.

Job Overview

  • Job Title: HDD Hardware Design Engineer
  • Company: Seagate Technology
  • Location: Fremont, CA / Bloomington, MN / Shakopee, MN / Longmont, CO / Scotts Valley, CA
  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Experience Level: Entry to Mid-level (0–3 years)
  • Salary Range: $38–$54/hr
  • Posted Date: 2026-06-07
  • Application Deadline: 2026-07-07

Role Context

Seagate's HDD electronics teams design the read/write channel ASICs, preamplifier ICs, and servo controller circuits that enable accurate data writing and reading at aerial densities of 3+ Terabits per square inch. The Bloomington, MN campus focuses on read/write head electronics and servo systems, while Fremont handles system integration and qualification. Engineers work on physical phenomena at the edge of what magnetic recording theory permits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and characterize analog front-end circuits for HDD read channel or write driver applications
  • Develop test setups for measuring head-media interface performance on HDD spinstand equipment
  • Analyze servo track following performance and identify hardware root causes of position errors
  • Collaborate with ASIC design teams on channel IC specifications and silicon bring-up
  • Support reliability testing and failure analysis on HDD hardware subsystems
  • Write technical reports for customer qualification activities

Requirements & Skills

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering with analog circuit or signal processing background
  • Analog circuit design or characterization experience
  • MATLAB or Python skills for signal analysis and data processing
  • Familiarity with magnetic recording physics or servo control systems is a plus
  • Lab measurement skills with oscilloscopes and RF/analog instrumentation
  • Detail-oriented with strong root cause analysis methodology

Benefits & Work Conditions

  • $38–$54/hr with Seagate equity and annual bonus
  • Onsite access to specialized HDD test equipment
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match and employee stock purchase plan
  • Tuition assistance and professional development programs

Who Should Apply

Engineers interested in the physics of magnetic recording and the analog circuits that operate at its limits. Seagate is one of only two companies designing HDD electronics at scale (with Western Digital), making this one of the most specialized hardware engineering domains available — and one that develops genuinely rare skills.

About the Company

Seagate Technology is one of the world's two largest HDD manufacturers, producing Exos enterprise drives used by every major hyperscale cloud provider. Its Lyve Cloud storage-as-a-service platform extends its reach into data management, and its HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording) technology enables the next generation of HDD density beyond conventional perpendicular recording.
