Data Scientist I

Amazon

Full-time Onsite United States

Job Description

About This Role

Amazon is hiring Data Scientists I — the entry point for data science at one of the world's most data-intensive companies. You will work on supply chain optimization, customer personalization, advertising, or operations analytics, using data to power decisions that directly affect millions of customers.

Job Overview

  • Job Title: Data Scientist I
  • Company: Amazon
  • Location: Seattle, WA / New York, NY / Austin, TX / Nashville, TN / Arlington, VA
  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Experience Level: Entry-level (0–2 years)
  • Salary Range: $42–$58/hr
  • Posted Date: 2026-06-04
  • Application Deadline: 2026-07-04

Role Context

Amazon's data scientists operate within two-pizza teams and own analytical problems end to end — from pulling data to presenting recommendations to senior leadership. DS-I roles are paired with a senior scientist for their first year but are expected to independently scope analyses within six months. Teams span retail, AWS, Alexa, Prime Video, and logistics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build statistical and ML models to support forecasting, ranking, or anomaly detection
  • Query and transform large datasets using SQL and Python/PySpark
  • Define and monitor business metrics for operational teams
  • Design controlled experiments and interpret results under guidance
  • Prepare data-driven narratives in Amazon's six-page memo format for leadership reviews
  • Collaborate with software engineers to productionize model outputs

Requirements & Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering
  • Strong SQL skills — experience writing complex joins, window functions, and aggregations
  • Python proficiency for data wrangling and model building
  • Working knowledge of supervised learning, regression, and time-series methods
  • Ability to communicate analytical findings to non-technical business partners
  • Internship or capstone project experience with real datasets preferred

Benefits & Work Conditions

  • $42–$58/hr with Amazon RSUs vesting over 4 years and signing bonus
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with Amazon match and employee stock purchase plan
  • Paid parental leave up to 20 weeks
  • $2,500 annual learning and education benefit

Who Should Apply

Graduates who are data-driven, detail-oriented, and comfortable presenting analytical work to leadership. Amazon rewards scientists who balance statistical rigor with practical business judgment — if you can explain a model's limitations as clearly as its outputs, you will succeed here.

About the Company

Amazon is a global leader in e-commerce, cloud computing (AWS), and logistics. Its data science organization spans every business unit and operates at a scale that makes even simple analyses complex — billions of rows, real-time systems, and decisions with immediate financial consequences.

How to Apply

Apply via Amazon Jobs. Filter by "Data Science" and select entry-level roles. Expect an online SQL/statistics assessment followed by a virtual loop covering coding, modeling judgment, and Amazon Leadership Principles.
