Seattle Fire Department
The Seattle Fire Department is accepting applications for Firefighter Recruits. Seattle's unique geography — bordered by Puget Sound, Lake Washington, and the Cascade foothills — means SFD firefighters handle a mix of urban structure fires, marine emergencies, wildland-urban interface fires, and a significant volume of medical calls in one of the Pacific Northwest's fastest-growing cities.
Seattle FD recruits complete a 16-week training academy followed by a 12-month probationary period. The department operates 34 fire stations and places a strong emphasis on EMS — all SFD companies respond to medical calls, and paramedic advancement is actively supported. Recruits are assigned to engine, ladder, or aid units based on department need.
Pacific Northwest residents seeking a challenging, rewarding career in a geographically diverse fire environment. Seattle FD is known for its supportive station culture and strong investment in member development — from EMT to paramedic to officer promotions over a full career.
Seattle Fire Department operates 34 stations with approximately 1,100 uniformed personnel. It serves one of the Pacific Northwest's most rapidly growing urban areas, operating specialized units for marine response, hazardous materials, and urban search and rescue in addition to standard engine and ladder companies.
Apply at seattle.gov/fire/careers. The hiring process includes a written civil service exam, CPAT, oral board interview, background investigation, and medical and psychological evaluations. Exam dates are announced on the SFD careers page.
