Role Context

Seattle FD recruits complete a 16-week training academy followed by a 12-month probationary period. The department operates 34 fire stations and places a strong emphasis on EMS — all SFD companies respond to medical calls, and paramedic advancement is actively supported. Recruits are assigned to engine, ladder, or aid units based on department need.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to structural fires in Seattle's mix of historic and modern construction
• Deliver emergency medical services; all personnel are certified as First Responders or EMTs
• Conduct marine and water rescue operations on Puget Sound and Lake Washington
• Perform technical rescue including vehicle extrication and confined space entry
• Support wildland-urban interface fire response during summer fire seasons
• Maintain apparatus readiness and station facilities between emergency responses

Requirements & Skills

• Washington State residency at time of application
• High school diploma or GED required; 30 college credits preferred
• Pass Seattle Civil Service written exam
• CPAT certification required prior to hire
• Valid Washington State driver's license
• Pass medical evaluation, psychological screen, and background investigation
