About This Role
RailWay America is hiring Locomotive Engineers for freight and passenger rail operations across the United States. Locomotive engineers operate billion-dollar rail equipment on critical national freight corridors and earn significantly above average wages, plus comprehensive union benefits and retirement packages. We provide all required training — no prior rail experience needed to apply.

- Operate freight or passenger locomotives safely along assigned rail corridors, adhering strictly to signal indications, speed restrictions, and operating rules
- Conduct pre-departure locomotive inspections including mechanical checks, brake tests, and radio communication verification
- Monitor locomotive performance during operation — respond to brake systems, traction control alerts, and engine fault warnings
- Communicate with train dispatchers, signal operators, and crew members via radio throughout every trip
- Maintain accurate trip logs, delay reports, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) documentation
- Handle emergency situations including track obstructions, mechanical failures, and grade crossing incidents calmly and per operating procedures
- Complete ongoing FRA medical certifications and locomotive engineer qualification reviews
Required Skills and Qualifications
- No college degree required — high school diploma or GED is the minimum educational requirement
- Must pass FRA locomotive engineer certification after completing the company training programme
- Strong spatial awareness, concentration, and mechanical aptitude for operating complex rail equipment
- Physical fitness including good colour vision (no red-green colour blindness) and hearing per FRA medical standards
- Willingness to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays as freight rail runs 24/7/365
- Prior rail conductor or rail mechanical experience is an advantage
What We Offer
- Monthly earnings of $5,800–$8,400 based on seniority, territory, and overtime
- Fully funded locomotive engineer training programme — no out-of-pocket cost to the candidate
- Union representation with negotiated wage scales, annual increases, and strong grievance procedures
- Tier 1 railroad retirement (significantly better than Social Security) and full family medical coverage
- Career pathway to Senior Engineer, Territory Manager, and Training Instructor roles
