Full-time Hybrid United States

Job Description

Data Scientist – Oncology (New Grad) – AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca is a global biopharmaceutical company with $45B+ in annual revenues and one of the world's leading oncology pipelines — including blockbuster cancer drugs Tagrisso, Imfinzi, Lynparza, and Calquence used by millions of cancer patients worldwide. AstraZeneca's US oncology headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD is a hub of computational biology, real-world evidence, and precision medicine data science. AstraZeneca uses AI and machine learning to accelerate drug discovery, optimize clinical trials, and personalize cancer treatment through biomarker-driven patient stratification. We are hiring New Grad Data Scientists to join AstraZeneca's Oncology Data Science team.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze clinical trial data from AstraZeneca's oncology pipeline — building statistical models evaluating treatment efficacy, safety signals, and biomarker-response relationships
  • Develop machine learning models for patient stratification — identifying genomic, proteomic, and clinical biomarkers predicting response to AstraZeneca's oncology therapies
  • Process and analyze real-world evidence (RWE) datasets from electronic health records, claims databases, and tumor registries to supplement clinical trial findings
  • Build survival analysis models (Kaplan-Meier, Cox proportional hazards, parametric survival) for oncology clinical endpoints including overall survival and progression-free survival
  • Collaborate with AstraZeneca's biostatisticians and clinical scientists to support FDA regulatory submissions with data science analyses
  • Develop NLP pipelines extracting structured cancer patient data from clinical notes and pathology reports for real-world evidence studies

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or Computational Biology
  • Strong statistical skills — survival analysis, mixed models, Bayesian methods for clinical data
  • Python and R proficiency for statistical analysis and ML model development
  • Familiarity with genomics data (NGS, RNA-seq, TCGA), clinical trial design, or oncology biology
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for clinical data analysis (ICH E9, FDA guidance documents)

Benefits

  • Competitive salary with AstraZeneca annual bonus and stock options
  • Work on cancer treatments that extend and save patients' lives worldwide
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) with AstraZeneca matching
  • Gaithersburg, MD campus with cutting-edge oncology research facilities
