We are hiring New Grad Data Engineers in San Jose to build the data infrastructure powering the world's most trusted digital payments platform.
Responsibilities
- Build PayPal's transaction data pipelines using Apache Spark — transforming billions of payment events into analytics datasets for fraud, risk, and product analytics teams
- Develop PayPal's real-time fraud feature engineering pipeline — computing behavioral risk signals from Kafka transaction streams for PayPal's ML-based fraud scoring engine
- Implement PayPal's data lakehouse on AWS using Apache Iceberg for time-travel queries supporting regulatory audit requirements and fraud investigation workflows
- Build Venmo's social payment data pipelines — processing P2P payment feeds, friend graph events, and social activity for Venmo's personalization features
- Develop PayPal's merchant analytics data mart — transforming transaction data into merchant performance dashboards accessible via PayPal Business APIs
- Implement data quality and lineage tracking ensuring PayPal's financial data pipelines meet PCI DSS and SOX audit compliance requirements
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or Software Engineering
- Python and SQL proficiency; Scala for Spark development is a plus
- Understanding of fintech data concepts: payment rails, fraud signals, and transaction processing
- Familiarity with Apache Spark, Kafka, AWS data services, or distributed data systems
- Strong data quality mindset for working with financial transaction data requiring PCI DSS compliance
