Backend Engineer – New Grad – Reddit

We are hiring New Grad Backend Engineers to build the technology powering the conversations that matter most.
Responsibilities
- Build Reddit's core platform backend in Python and Go — implementing post submission, comment threading, voting, and subreddit membership systems serving 97M+ DAU
- Develop Reddit's feed ranking backend — implementing the algorithms that personalize the home feed, subreddit feeds, and Best Sort for billions of daily content interactions
- Build Reddit's advertising platform backend — implementing ad auction, targeting, pacing, and measurement for Reddit's $500M+ annual advertising business
- Implement Reddit's search and discovery backend using Elasticsearch — enabling full-text search across billions of posts, comments, and community content
- Build trust and safety backend services — implementing spam detection, account integrity, and content moderation tools used by Reddit's 50,000+ volunteer moderators
- Design Cassandra, PostgreSQL, and Redis data models for Reddit's social graph, content storage, and real-time voting and engagement systems
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
- Proficiency in Python or Go (Reddit's primary backend languages)
- Understanding of distributed systems, social platform architecture, and feed ranking concepts
- Familiarity with NoSQL databases (Cassandra, Redis) and message queues (Kafka, SQS)
- Genuine enthusiasm for Reddit's platform and community mission
