Backend Developer – New Grad – Shopify

We are hiring New Grad Backend Developers to join Shopify's engineering team building commerce infrastructure for the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Responsibilities
- Build merchant-facing backend features in Ruby on Rails — including product catalog management, inventory tracking, and order fulfillment workflows
- Develop GraphQL APIs consumed by Shopify's Storefront, Admin, and Partner apps used by millions of merchants and developers
- Implement high-throughput checkout services handling flash sale traffic spikes at 100,000+ transactions per minute
- Design MySQL database schemas and Redis caching strategies for Shopify's multi-tenant, globally distributed commerce platform
- Build Shopify Flow automation engine enabling merchants to create no-code business workflows triggered by store events
- Contribute to Shopify's open-source projects including Liquid templating engine and Rails performance patches
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
- Proficiency in Ruby, Python, Go, or another object-oriented backend language
- Understanding of web application architecture, REST/GraphQL APIs, and relational databases
- Ability to write clean, well-tested code with strong object-oriented design principles
- Interest in e-commerce, developer tools, or entrepreneurship is a plus
