Software Engineer – Backend (University Graduate) – Databricks

We are hiring University Graduate Backend Engineers in San Francisco to help build the data platform of the AI era.
Responsibilities
- Build Databricks platform backend services in Scala and Java — implementing cluster management, job scheduling, and multi-tenant compute orchestration
- Contribute to the Databricks Runtime — Databricks' optimized Apache Spark distribution with photon vectorized query engine
- Develop Unity Catalog — Databricks' unified data and AI governance layer managing tables, models, and volumes across clouds
- Build Databricks SQL backend services enabling enterprise BI workloads with sub-second query latency on Delta Lake tables
- Implement MLflow model serving infrastructure enabling low-latency, high-throughput model inference for production ML applications
- Design REST APIs and CLI tools used by data engineers and data scientists to interact with Databricks platform services
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
- Strong proficiency in Scala, Java, Python, or Go
- Understanding of distributed systems, parallel computing, or query processing concepts
- Familiarity with Apache Spark, distributed SQL, or cloud data platforms is a strong plus
- Academic or project experience with data engineering, ML systems, or big data processing
