About This Role
PhonePe is hiring a specialized Data Scientist – Risk & Fraud to build the ML models that protect India's largest payments platform from fraud, money laundering, and financial risk — safeguarding 500 million+ users and billions of daily transactions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop real-time and batch ML models for payment fraud detection, account takeover, merchant risk scoring, and AML (anti-money laundering) screening
- Build graph-based fraud network detection algorithms using graph neural networks or community detection methods
- Design anomaly detection systems for novel fraud patterns with minimal false positive rates
- Conduct deep-dive investigation and forensic analytics on fraud events to identify new attack vectors
- Collaborate with risk policy, engineering, and compliance teams to deploy real-time fraud decisioning systems
- Monitor model performance, manage model drift, and develop model retraining strategies in a dynamic fraud landscape
Requirements & Skills
- B.Tech/M.Tech in CS, Statistics, or a quantitative field
- 3–7 years of ML experience — fintech risk, fraud detection, or credit risk modeling is strongly preferred
- Expert Python and SQL skills with experience in streaming data tools (Kafka, Flink) for real-time scoring
- Experience with gradient boosting (XGBoost, LightGBM), anomaly detection, and graph ML frameworks
- Understanding of payments compliance, UPI ecosystem, and Indian financial regulation is a plus
